RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION (VNUS CLOSURE)

The VNUS Closure (the name of the company that makes the radiofrequency closure catheter) has become a useful alternative method for the treatment of varicose veins. It treats leg veins in superficial and perforating system that have venous reflux, underlying cause of varicose veins and venous ulcers. A small catheter is inserted, usually through a needle-stick in the skin, into the damaged vein. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy to the vein wall causing it to heat. As the vein warms, it collapses and seals. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia with ultrasound monitoring, usually in less than one hour. VNUS Closure patients usually have relief of their symptoms and a short recovery. Usual activities of daily living may be resumed the same day and return to work the following day. Closure patients should not lift heavy weights or perform aerobic exercise for two weeks. The procedure is a “same day” procedure that can be done under regional or local anesthesia. Most patients experience good cosmetic results with minimal or no visible scars.
